William Genereux, the founder of G-LAW, is an internationally-recognized lawyer in the area of entertainment law, advising clients on matters such as licensing, branding, recording agreements, music publishing, and the purchase and sale of sound recordings and compositions. He is co-editor of the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers’ (IAEL) 2021 book entitled “Nationalism vs. Globalism: Regional and Transnational Legal Issues Reshaping the Entertainment Industry.” He regularly participates in IAEL conferences in Cannes, France and more recently in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Always at the forefront of legal developments William particularly enjoys advising on emerging areas – e.g. blockchains and NFTs. He is a former chair of the Entertainment, Media and Communications section of the Canadian Bar Association – Ontario, and has been a lecturer at the Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University, Toronto. William’s practice includes corporate law and litigation. His skill-set is rare because he is both a transactional lawyer and a litigator. His experience runs deep. He began his law career in the mid-1980s at a 100-lawyer firm, with clients including construction companies, professional liability insurers, major manufacturing companies, financial institutions, property developers, and the Canadian Olympic Association. He became a partner at that firm then later opened his own office and at the same time branched-out to co-own and operate a dance music record label. Today William practices independently in a group of about 50 lawyers and staff. He has an active interest in mentorship, and volunteers with Artists’ Legal Aid Services, which is affiliated with the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School Faculties of Law.
